Great year in Britain, great year at British Fashion Awards

By November 28, 2012 Designers, Events

It is no secret that British fashion has been embraced by the world and the entire industry in the past year, I would say that after the Royal Wedding, British talents started to invade boutiques, red carpets and high streets worldwide. So this was a great year for it to be my first time at the British Fashion Awards ceremony, which took place at The Savoy Theatre last night. I must say that I have never been somewhere with  so many celebrities at the same place, every British designer I truly admire was there and my beloved Mexican actress Salma Hayek too, so I did enjoy it to its best. Congratulations to all the winners and to the amazing Spanish shoe god  Manolo Blahnik who received a very special recognition. Stella McCartney was awarded twice, including designer of the year after all the excitement of London Olympics 2012; Cara Delevingne, who in the latest season hit the catwalk over 30 times, won model of the year; and Alexa Chung won ‘British Style’ for the third time; when receiving the award she said: ‘I now live in New York and sometimes get homesick, so it’s great to know that I still get this in here.’

It was a bit of a hazard to catch up with the event straight from the office. Imagine those movie scenes where she changes in the taxi? Well, something quite similar happened with me last night! No hair done, make up, nothing, just put the dress on and get in! I love the improvisation sometimes though. Also by the quality of the photos you will see that I didn’t have my proper camera, but here you go, a piece of my night at the Awards.

Great ceremony. Lovely to see the fashion industry gathered at one place, and don’t know if you are a fan, but  singer Rita Ora closed the ceremony. See all winners here.

What do you think about the winners?

A couple of months ago I mentioned that London became top #1 fashion capital, overtaking New York. Much talent, plus good and tragic news -Alexander McQueen’s death- triggered London’s coronation in the media, but the Royal Wedding was the most obvious event that made it happen.

Last night the British Fashion Awards were held at London’s exclusive The Savoy hotel in Mayfair.

Once again TV presenter Alexa Chung won the British Style award 2011 – by public vote.

Elle Style Awards 2010 spotted the Olsen twins as the new style icons

By March 7, 2010 Designers, Elle, Events, Style Icons

Last Monday 22 February Elle magazine launched an event that added a special sparkle to the madness of the London Fashion Week 2010.

Elle Style Awards is held every year to honour the most stylish ambassadors in the TV, film and fashion industries. This year took place at London’s Grand Connaught Rooms.

The BAFTA’s red carpet was an entire success, but another one came quickly afterwards, where celebrities such as Kristen Stewart, Claire Danes, Corinne Bailey Rae, Alexa Chung, Danii Minogue, Olivia Palermo, Leona Lewis, Naomi Campbell, Carey Mulligan and Olsen twins were photographed as they arrived.

The winners of this awards surprised the audience, as the Olsen twins were named Elle’s Style Icons of 2010. Mary-Kate had a rocking gothic look in classic black Lanvin, Proenza Schouler clutch and Bulgari jewels. On the other hand, Ashley wore a vintage Christian Lacroix haute couture, in oyster-silk, luxuriously layered with mounds of tulle, vintage clutch, gorgeous Fendi platform shoes and Bulgari jewels. For this, they simply said: “We don’t like this [saying thanks on the stage], but thank you.”

Supermodel Naomi Campbell scooped the Outstanding Contribution award. The 39-year-old was honoured for her 25-year career and her work as global patron of The White Ribbon Alliance (WRA), which promotes safe pregnancy.

Prime Minister’s wife, Sarah Brown, introduced Campbell as “a woman who has campaigned tirelessly on behalf of the WRA” before presenting her with the award.
But Campbell looked emotional as she fought in tears and said: “I dedicate my award to a close friend who loved and cared about women, Alexander Lee McQueen.”
In addition, Claudia Schiffer was named Model of the Year. That proves that age doesn’t matter, it’s a born-with natural beauty.BAFTA winners Carey Mulligan and Colin Firth were named Actress and Actor of the year. Double-prizes!

Mulligan confessed she was hungover from celebrating her Bafta win the night before, but making the huge effort of coming with a hangover was worth it.

Twilight star Kristen Stewart was presented with the Elle Style Woman of the Year award by Elle’s editor-in-chief Lorraine Candy. Seriously, Stewart a stylish “woman”? Surprise, surprise!

TV presenter, model and DJ Alexa Chung was presented the Editor’s Choice awardby the actor-turned-musician Jared Leto.Ms Candy said: “Alexa Chung is incredibly popular because she always looks so glamorous and I think she’s a real leader for style.”

Nicholas Hoult scooped the Breakthrough Talent award and  Florence and the Machine were given the Music prize by Corinne Bailey Rae.

And, it’s worth saying that the International Designer winner was the charismatic Burberry’s ultimate figure, Christopher Bailey.
