Did you know there was an Aspen Fashion Week? Well, it was a surprise for me. Located right in the heart of Colorado, this event caught my attention, as what exactly its collections look like? I expect lots of outdoor outfits, of course, as well as leather, furs, fringes, big boots and a wild west breeze.
The rocky mountains of Colorado have been my skiing destination for years now (Vail, specifically) and finding out that it’s about to host the presentation of uprising fashion designers makes me want to just find an excuse to get on a plane and fly to the slopes (I wish).
But the best news of this all is that a new Venezuelan designer debuts her first accessories collection at the fashion week this year and that’s enough reason for me to present an emerging talent from my home country. I’ve known her for decades, I’d like to introduce you to Pilar Tarrau, an utterly stylish Latin woman based in Miami. Her life under the sun, next to the beach and her steps full of energy are reflected when she speaks with such excitement about her handbag and jewellery designs. Her logo is a bull, do I have to say more?
Inspired by her formative years on country estates in her native Venezuela and ski trips to Aspen, Pilar uses the highest quality leathers, furs and materials in her remarkable handbags and accessories for her Aspen Ranch Collection, which captures the land where cowboy boots and hats are appropriate.
This fringed backpack (pictured) in black, cobalt blue and cow print is clearly my favourite. It’s timeless, it’s chic and has a young elegance.
Taking place this week between 13 and 16 March, the Aspen International Fashion Week will give the opportunity to emerging designers, like Pilar, to showcase their creations alongside big fashion names such as J Crew.
I had a quick Q&A with her ahead of the show:
Q. How do you feel about your debut?
A.I am very excited about this collection, Colorado is like my second home and I am very happy to be able to launch my first collection in Aspen.
Q. What was your main inspiration for your handbag collection?
A. The main inspiration for my handbag collection was between cowboys and ranches in Venezuela. I also had a house in Snowmass and I used to go very often in winter and summer for vacations.
Q. What was the best and worst part of putting a handbag collection together for the first time?
A. The best part was to design the handbags. Drawing, choosing the materials and see the final product. The worst part was that I did not get to sleep, hahaha.
Q. How would you describe your ideal client?
A. This collection is for people that like a luxury western look, ski resorts, but it is also for any person that likes different and trendy things with a classic look. Q. Future plans? A.I am looking forward to going to New York and London fashion week.
Wait, did she just say NY and London fashion weeks? Hold on your horses madam! Well said. I can’t wait to see you at LFW!
Best of luck Pilar!
